What
do I do? The
function of professional Yacht Captain
needs little explanation, but what is an Owner’s Rep/Owner’s Project
Manager/Consultant? When
I represent an Owner during a build my function is primarily to ensure that
the contract and spec book requirements are fulfilled by the Shipyard, I also
co-ordinate Owner’s Supply Items. I
will follow the build from start to finish spending extensive time at the
shipyard and sometimes Captain the yacht after launch. When
I work with Owner or Designer at a pre-contact stage the object is to prepare
a specification that is as definitive as possible, given the changes in
technology and equipment which occur during the approx 3 year duration from
concept to completion. I may work solely as a consultant or after the
Contract is signed I may continue as Owner’s Rep. I
work in a co-operative relationship with the Designer, Naval Architect &
Shipyard. A
quality Designer, Naval Architect & Shipyard will build a good yacht, I
believe that the synergy of them & those with operational experience can
turn a good yacht into a great one. By
great I mean a yacht that is: · Easy to maintain which equates to retaining
its value, · Safe for crew to use for the obvious
reasons plus minimizing Owner’s Liability · Easy for Crew to use which equates to
calm, quality, unobtrusive service, · Has systems which are easy for Owner & guests to
understand & operate which equates to enhanced Owner &
guest enjoyment · is fully suitable for the cruising areas envisaged which
equates to minimised downtime & repair cost, · achieving a balance between customizing the yacht to
the precise desires of the Owner which enhances subsequent
sale-ability. All
this is specifically advantageous to the most import person on a build: The Client & Owner. |
