M/Y OSPREY

Captain Tork Buckley

OSPREY is a 36m (118 foot) wooden Motor Yacht.

She was built as a HAM Class inshore minesweeper in the early 1950s, later converted to a yacht. In mid 2000 I was involved planning and starting the necessary work to gain a Cayman Islands MCA “temporary dispensation to operate as a charter yacht”. Additionally at this time the crew accommodation was completely re-fit from bare wood.

The initial work had to be simple enough to be achieved quickly, while addressing the requirements of the Flag State surveyor.

Work included: structural fire protection, fire fighting, escape routes and other operational and equipment safety issues.

OSPREY’s construction is double  diagonal wood planking on metal framing.

Major work to the interior was especially undesirable given she had just come from a one year re-fit in the Far East.

Given that and her year of construction it was necessary to work closely and co-operatively with flag state surveyors to negotiate mutually acceptable solutions.

Working closely with Cayman MCA and Yachting Partners (the management company) a feasible work list and schedule was agreed.

This was the first stage in achieving complete Code Compliance and gaining a (Cayman) MCA Certificate of  Compliance.

After the initial work was done OSPREY was able to complete some charters prior to her winter shipyard period to complete MCA required work

OSPREY is currently close to achieving full certification.
