PILOT VESSEL CONVERSION

Captain Tork Buckley

Sister Ship

I started a search for, located and was instrumental in the purchase of a commercial vessel for conversion into an “Exploration” yacht for the Owner.

I found a 60m (193foot) Diesel-Electric vessel.

Prior to retirement she was a Dutch North Sea Ship’s Pilot Service Support Vessel.

She was a very suitable candidate for conversion given at least 2 of her sister ships had gone that route.

I proposed to  refit with a minimum period in the shipyard.

It was planned to use a yard principally for (minimum) Dry Dock Work and anti-fouling application. All interior and above the waterline work would be done dockside.

I put together a production team of Head Carpenter, Electrical/Electronic Engineer and Mechanical Engineer.

I made extensive researches in the areas of: quotations, (putting into) classification, compliance with MCA Code and other aspects of conversion including interior, electronics, engineering & yard work.

The principal use of the vessel was to be world cruising and she would carry a helicopter.

In order to maximize the service life of  the aircraft it was felt to be a necessity to store the helo in a sealed hanger when on passage.

I created a preliminary design concept for a lift to lower a helicopter from the landing deck into a below-decks climate-controlled hangar.
